The Arizona racetrack of Thunderbird Downs, built on the grounds of the Thunderbird Hotel in Las Vegas, was the brainchild of Joe Wells and was operational in the 1960s. It first opened for business as a 5 furlong oval racetrack in 1963 offering thoroughbred and quarter horse racing, and was briefly taken over by Joe W Brown in 1964, and for a short period became known as the Joe W Brown Racetrack until he sold it to Del Webb for $9.5 million. The track remained open for just 2 more years before closing in 1966, after which the buildings were demolished because the site was ripe for development. Today the former site is covered by prestigious buildings in the gambling capital of the world.
